Q. What was the purpose of the hospital ships?What was life like on board?Create a fact file about the hospital ships.

  1. The purpose of the hospital ships was to carry wounded patients.
  2. When the war ended the ships had moved 47,000 patients. 
  3. The hospital ships had to be marked white hulls, green strips and red crosses.
  4. The nurses looked after injured soldiers.
  5. They weren't to be used for any military purposes.
  6. They usually had 7-8 doctors, 3 chaplains,14 nurses and 60 -70 orderlies.
  7. It depended on your job,rank and gender to what life was going to be like on board.
  8. Union company cooks and stewards  serving officers first class menu and everyone else third class menu.
  9. Dunedin was the ships home port,Otago men featured strongly on the crews list of both ships.
  10. Serving hospital ships was not  always easy  even if you were a medic.During Marama's(a hospital ship) first journey over 60% of the orderlies fell sick as did 40% of the nurses and all but one doctor.
